St. Francisville, Louisiana

This antebellum-era plantation, now a bed-and-breakfast, is touted by its current owners as one of America’s most haunted homes -- and plenty of creepy incidents suggest it just might be. Take a tour of the home, built in 1796, and learn about Chloe, the ghost of a slave on the property who took revenge on her womanizing owner by poisoning his children. Legend has it that when other slaves discovered her action they hanged her from a nearby tree. Her apparition has since been spotted roaming the house in a white apron and green turban. Although many historians dispute the claim that 10 murders occurred on the plantation grounds, few deny that at least 1 murder did actually occur here (on the porch, an owner of the house was shot) and several other deaths occurred from yellow fever. A few souls seem to have stuck around, too. Guests have reported hearing footsteps on the stairs, the sounds of children playing and a grand piano that inexplicably repeats the same haunting chord over and over again … until someone enters the room. You may not get the best night’s sleep at this B&B, but it’s sure to be a memorable experience.
