Gettysburg National Military Park

Gettysburg National Military Park

Gettysburg National Military Park is the historic site of one of the most crucial battles of the American Civil War. Fought July 1-3, 1863, the Battle of Gettysburg resulted in Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s retreat to Virginia and the end of the Confederacy’s hope for independence. The park has several attractions, including the Pennsylvania Monument, which honors the soldiers who served in the Pennsylvania units during the bloody battle.

More than 50,000 soldiers died during the 3-day Battle of Gettysburg. Today, hundreds of markers dot the battlefield -- including the State of Pennsylvania Monument. The largest monument on the grounds, it commemorates the 34,530 Pennsylvania soldiers who served in battle -- the single largest group of Union forces to do so.
