One of the best ways to save money while traveling is not eating out. I try to stay in rentals as much as I can to cut down on spending, and while I was in Amsterdam this summer, HomeAway let me take a peek at some of their waterfront rentals. I stayed in an adorable 18th-century house along the historic Prinsengracht Canal and I loved being able to cook my own meals, do laundry and enjoy people-watching from the window. I loved sitting in this nook and listening to the different music people were listening to as they cruised by on the canal.

If you’re on a strict budget with no wiggle room, a B&B is a great choice. I’ve been known to take a banana or muffin from the breakfast buffet and stow it in my bag for a free snack on the go. The historic De Baronie has a top-floor studio with a kitchenette overlooking the quaint Oudeschans Canal for just 150 euros a night.
