Coffee With a Side of Style
Coffee is a great entry point for travelers in a new city. Locavore coffee shops are a way to get the lay of the land, chat up the locals for recommendations and ease into a busy day of sightseeing and pavement pounding. To that end, Travel Channel has rounded up some of the most interesting and design-forward coffee spots in the Capital City.
Better Half
A newcomer to the Austin scene, opened in March 2018, this coffee shop may be young but it is run by owners with years of experience in the business. Offering coffee, cocktails and amazing food fresh from their full-service kitchen, Better Half is quickly becoming the spot to be on the west side of town. Stop in for breakfast and grab a cortado with a jalapeno honey butter biscuit and a side of waffle iron hash browns or come in later in the evening and sip on a coffee infused cocktail while enjoying a Texas redfish dinner that would be right at home at any fine dining establishment.
Flat Track
Once located in a tiny room in the back of an independent bookstore with nothing more than an espresso bar and a few stools, Flat Track Coffee has found a new home just down the street on the east side of town. It’s hard to miss this shop with their vintage Chevy Van parked out front. Handpainted with the Flat Track logo, it’s not only the coffee shop's unofficial mascot it also doubles as their delivery van bringing house-roasted beans to different cafes and restaurants all over the city.
Figure 8 Coffee Purveyors
Tucked away in a quiet part of East Austin you’ll find Figure 8 Coffee, an unpretentious shop with a laid-back vibe. The baristas here are as friendly as they are knowledgeable, so don’t be afraid to pick their brains with any coffee related questions you may have. Once you finally decide what to order, take your java out back and have a seat on their shaded patio. And be sure to grab a staple of Texas cuisine, the breakfast taco!
Brew & Brew
Come for the coffee and stay for the beer! Serving drips, espressos, macchiatos, cappuccinos, and cold brews made with seasonal coffee beans you’re bound to sip on a different roast everytime you stop into the Brew & Brew. Using beans from roasters local and nationwide, you can rest assured that you’re getting a coffee made with the freshest beans around. Serving up coffee is only half the story at this shop; with 39 taps they are just as much a destination for the discerning beer drinker as they are a place to wake up in the morning. In addition to the coffee and a killer beer lineup, this shop serves fresh bagels from Rosen’s and is also connected to a mixed-use space where you can always catch an art show or watch a local band. You can easily spend hours at Brew & Brew enjoying tasty beverages from either menu while you sit on their bustling deck and watch the day go by.
Seventh Flag
Have you ever had (or heard of) nitro cold brew on tap? This is one of the only places in the city of Austin where you can get this creamy, smooth and ice cold coffee; it’s the perfect way to get your caffeine fix on a hot Texas day. With a light and minimalistic interior, Seventh Flag coffee is the perfect spot to sit down and read a book, get some work done, or plan the rest of your day in the Live Music Capital of the World. Located in South Austin, it is the perfect starting point to explore the famous South Congress Avenue.
