The Most Instagrammed Cities of 2017

Instagram released its Year in Review report for 2017, and unsurprisingly, travel photos and videos were popular for the platform. The seventh most used hashtag was #travel. These cities took the top 10 slots as the most Instagrammed based on geotags.

10: Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is famously known for being home to the ageless masterpieces of architectural legend Antoni Gaudi like the Sagrada Familia Basilica and Park Guell (pictured), which both make for great Instagram opportunities. 9: Istanbul

Coming in at the ninth most Instagrammed city, Turkey's capital city Istanbul straddles Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus Strait. Istanbul lies at physical and cultural crossroads and has been an ever-evolving city, as evidenced in its architecture. The Orthodox Church Hagia Sophia (pictured) is an architectural beauty that has served as an important monument for both Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. Once a church, later a mosque and now a museum, Hagia Sophia became a UNESCO world heritage site in 1985.

8: Jakarta, Indonesia

Another city with a historic mix of cultures, Jakarta, Indonesia's capital has been influenced by Javanese, Malay, Chinese, Arab, Indian and European cultures in its architecture, language and cuisine. With a population of more than 10 million people and one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in the world, it's easy to see why Jakarta holds the number eight spot.

7: St. Petersburg, Russia

Russia's second largest city after Moscow, St. Petersburg attracted Instagrammers from around the world. Known for its unique architecture, St. Petersburg is home to photo-worthy churches, museums and historic sites such as St. Isaac's Cathedral (pictured).

6: Los Angeles

From movie star-gazing in Hollywood to beach-going in Santa Monica, Los Angeles with its Instagram-worthy locations holds the number six slot for most Instagrammed city. Heading to LA? Check out these quintessential spots.

5: Paris

Oh, Paris. What's not to love about the City of Lights? From its world-class shopping, art museums and dining, there are photo opportunities at every corner in Paris. If you're planning a trip, check out these new worthwhile spots that have popped up since your last visit.

4: Sao Paulo, Brazil

The most populous and wealthiest city in Brazil, Sao Paulo lands the fourth spot for most Instagrammed city. The metropolis is also home to several of the tallest skyscraper buildings in Brazil, including the Mirante do Vale, Edificio Italia, Banespa, North Tower and many others. It's also home to the Octavio Frias de Oliveira bridge (pictured).

3: London

With a population of 8.7+ million and more than 17 million annual visitors, the capital city is full of photo-worthy sites like the London Eye, the Ferris wheel that stands 443 feet tall on the South Bank of the River Thames.

2: Moscow, Russia

The most populous city in Russia, interesting architecture is one reason this city is ideal for Instagram. From The Kremlin to the colorful St. Basil's Cathedral (pictured), explore must-see attractions in Moscow.

1: New York

Topping off the list, New York City ranks as the number one city with the most Instagram photos. The photo-sharing app also released its most Instagrammed locations of the year, and unsurprisingly, several are in New York City, including the Brooklyn Bridge (pictured) and Central Park.
