Work & Intern Abroad
If your summer or semester abroad wasn't enough to sate your appetite for living overseas, the chance to work or intern abroad is another option to experience another culture and country. Here are some tips on how to research the options and opportunities available:
Overseas Internships
Spending a summer as an office intern usually isn't very glamorous. An internship in a foreign country, on the other hand, can be. Overseas internships are great ways to accrue credits and experience new cultures. To find opportunities abroad, look at online resources like InternAbroad.com or at your school, to see which international cities offer internships geared toward your major. Once you've determined a destination, expect to file the requisite applications and submit your resume. After you've wowed them and filled out more forms for a work visa, you'll finally be on your way to, say, Paris for your dream internship.
Work Abroad
Most people are discouraged from applying for jobs abroad because of the government restrictions and overwhelming piles of documents necessary to earn cash in a different country. Venues like WYSE Work Abroad Association make the entire process easier. Popular opportunities include teaching English abroad and volunteering with various international groups. Another option, which few consider, is working in hostels. Many hire itinerant and cash-strapped 20-somethings to work for weeks at a time. Check with specific hostels for opportunities.
