Why we like it -- One of the joys of a camping vacation is spontaneously stopping at parks and campgrounds along the way. Campwhere makes this process easy, by sniffing out your location via GPS and serving up a list of nearby campgrounds (in the US and those that cross into Canada). Beneath each listing, you get a list of important amenities, like showers or septic hookups, and information on whether reservations are accepted. The app also offers weather forecasts for each campground and directions, along with contact information.
Improvements we’d like to see -- Campwhere only includes destinations that are accessible by car or a short walk, so if you’re strictly a backwoods camper, this app won’t help much. A little more logic in the search results would also be an improvement. Campgrounds that are only accessible via ferry, for instance, should be labeled as such, so you don’t waste time sitting at a terminal waiting for a boat. The lack of an Android or BlackBerry version, too, is a big drawback. Still, those with Apple devices will find Campwhere worth the price.
