Haunted Destination: Hell-Fire Caves
West Wycombe, UK
Last Friday, Zak, Nick and Aaron ventured into the English countryside for a chilling trip into the dark, mysterious Hell-Fire Caves. After winding through the long, creepy underground passages, the Ghost Adventures crew recreated a series of bizarre pagan rituals in an attempt to conjure the spirits of 18th-century royalty, who are said to still inhabit the underground tunnels. The catacombs lie 300 feet below West Wycombe Hill, and were excavated in the 1750s for Sir Francis Dashwood, who was looking to add to his extensive landscaped gardens. The caves became the meeting place for Dashwood’s Hellfire Club, which was made up of members of England’s 18th-century nobility. Hellfire meetings are said to have consisted of sacrifices and worship of pagan figures -- and maybe even some more sinister rituals. Even if you don’t spot Dashwood’s ghost, you’re sure to feel a little uneasy a half-mile underground in the strange, meandering system of tunnels.
