Haunted Destination: Rolling Hills Asylum
Bethany, New York
In January of 1827, the red-brick building that became known as the Rolling Hills Asylum was officially opened and “ready for the reception of paupers.” The facility was originally designed as a poorhouse, catering to orphans, unwed mothers, widows, the disabled and the mentally challenged. Eventually, the building was expanded to accommodate the criminally insane – making for a rather bizarre mix of personalities. A visit to the on-site graveyard will send chills down your spine. It seems as though many spirits never settled in to their crowded, unmarked graves … in recent years, the sullen ghosts of a few of the "inmates" have been spotted roaming the halls.
