Villa San Giacomo, Amalfi Coast

Perched on terraces high above the Amalfi Coast and the glittering Mediterranean, Villa San Giacomo boasts one of the region's few private pools. Sea breezes along the cliffs are especially sweet here, given the upper terrace's citrus trees, jasmine and bougainvillea. This elegant, Neoclassical edifice has an exceedingly high-tech secret: With the push of a button, the patio at Villa di Torno descends and deepens, transforming a wading area with just inches of water into a properly heated swimming pool. To complete the sense that you and your guests are part of an international spy caper, the villa's proprietors suggest chartering a vaporetto (Venetian-style water taxi) to transport you around Lake Como from your private dock for the duration of your stay.

Villa d'Orcia, Val d'Orcia

California's Napa Valley does a respectable job of offering oenophiles luxurious digs, but you can't beat a private infinity pool in Tuscany. Castello di Panzano is a 10-minute walk from the center of its bustling Tuscan hill town (and specialty foods and wines for aperitifs and dining alfresco on the patio by the shaded poolhouse), but its enclosed park — including woods, an olive grove and a traditional Italian garden — offers an entirely private view.
