7 Waterfront Workout Trips
Sometimes the best part of sticking to your workout goals is the view.
Yoga at California's Terranea Resort.
If you get tired of fitting workouts into your vacation, why not make the workout your vacation? Better yet, make it a beach vacation. Sound crazy? These fitness events across the country have something in common: amazing views of the ocean. Burn calories, find Zen and snap gorgeous Instagrams all in one trip. If you’re not one to stay still, check out these incredible workouts.
Run
Huntington Beach’s Surf City Marathon & Half Marathon should be on every runner’s bucket list. The California classic is flat (which means fast!) and one of the most scenic marathon routes in the country. You’ll travel along the Pacific Coastal Highway with the ocean by your side, passing iconic landmarks such as the Huntington Beach Pier and the Bolsa Chica Wetlands. Not enough time to train? Surf City has a 5K option, too.
Bike
Instead of driving California’s historic 17-Mile Drive, bike it! Just like the road, the bike lanes are oceanside, have incredible views and pass iconic landmarks such as Lover’s Point, Asilomar Beach and Point Pinos Lighthouse. If 17 miles sounds far, you can rent an electric or pedal-assist bike from Big Sur Adventures. These e-bikes make hills a breeze.
Stretch
Terranea Resort
LA’s oceanfront resort Terranea has an incredible outdoor yoga program with summer events like Full Moon Yoga in August and the resort’s annual Seaside Yoga Gathering for National Yoga Awareness Month. Classes are held outside on the lawn overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the Palos Verdes peninsula. The view at sunset is something you’ll never forget.
Dance
Tighten your core and experience Hawaiian culture at Hilton Waikoloa Village. The resort’s resident kumu hula, or instructor of hula, teaches the basics against the island’s jaw-dropping volcanic coastline. Hula is beautiful but it’s also a great low-impact cardio workout that strengthens back muscles and improves posture.
Swing and Swish
Perfect your serve or your 3-point while taking in the South Beach horizon. Miami’s W South Beach has a rooftop gym with tennis and basketball courts perfect for private lessons or group games. The courts also offer rooftop bootcamps with the hotel’s trainers.
