What Mom Really Wants for Mother's Day
Because not all moms spa and brunch.
Why are Mother’s Day gifts so cute? Pretty pink flowers and Instagrammable French toast...Meh. Here at Travel Channel, we know moms love adventure, too. So this year, do something fun and spontaneous. Book a trip that’s action-packed. Here are five ideas to wow mom this year.

Go Cave Rappelling
Moaning Cavern, in California’s Gold Country and just two and a half hours from San Francisco, offers a three-hour trek through unlit cave areas. Don a headlamp and venture through the cave’s crawl-ways like a true explorer. For the adrenaline seekers, the tour starts with an optional 165-foot rappel down a massive and gorgeous chamber. But for light adventure, the cavern also offers a family walking tour and it will be free for mothers on Mother’s Day.

Visit an Active Volcano
Even if mom’s not a science geek, she’ll be mesmerized by the lava fields and steaming bluffs at Volcanoes National Park on Hawaii’s big island. The sites are pretty bucket-list worthy and it warrants a memorable family photo. Lookout spots for Kīlauea, Hawaii’s most-active volcano, are easily accessible via Crater Rim Drive. And a walk through 500-year old Nahuku, commonly known as the Thurston Lava Tube, is not to be missed.

Go Helmet Diving
If you’re not certified to dive but have a mom who loves the ocean, this is a great adventure for the family. Helmet diving, such as SeaTrek’s guided underwater tours, doesn’t require certification. You don’t even need to know how to swim because you just walk...on the bottom of the ocean floor! The unique helmets supply oxygen and give you a panoramic view of ocean life. Get up close and personal with fish without even getting your hair wet.

Take a Cultural Dance Class
Dance classes are a great way to build confidence and learn something new. LA Bellydance Academy offers classes in bellydance, traditional Tahitian dance and Hawaiian hula. Learn about a different culture while you get a unique workout. And don’t think this is just a mother-daughter outing. Book a private lesson and get the whole family on their feet.

Go Kayaking
If mom is a known paddler, up the ante with a Mississippi River tour through a working lock. Above the Falls Sports in Minneapolis, Minnesota offers a half-day journey from downtown to the popular Minnehaha Falls. The views of the city skyline are incredible and the falls at the end of the trip are gorgeous but the best part is traveling through a massive lock in a tiny kayak. Sink down and down and down and watch the huge gates open to level water. It’s fascinating, a teeny bit terrifying and will give you that Alice in Wonderland shrinking feeling.
