Anthony Bourdain takes a much-anticipated trip to Asia to visit the two main hubs of "mother cuisine": Japan and China. While both Japan and China are vastly different in terms of their history, traditions, and gastronomy. Tony's goal is to explore those differences but also enjoy something at which they both excel - food!
New York City chef/author Anthony Bourdain is invited to film in the research laboratory of Ferran Adria, the most controversial and imitated chef in the world--chef/owner of El Bulli, voted "World's Best" by Restaurant Magazine and the most visited by chefs on sabbatical. The lab, an ultra modern, Dr. No-like facility with sliding walls, backlit ingredients, latest equipment and a full staff of devotees is tucked away inside a vast, renaissance-era palace in the old section of Barcelona, Spain. Adria and his chefs close the El Bulli restaurant for six months out of every year to work on new concepts. Bourdain tracks Ferran's process from lab to a once-in-a-lifetime meal at El Bulli restaurant, enjoying a high-concept, surrealist, haute cuisine meal of unparalleled creativity and striking visual appearance.
Sure it might look glamorous coming through your glowing television screen, but making a television show is not as cut-and-dry as you may think. And Anthony Bourdain is here to show just that; he has put together some of the funniest, most embarrassing, and even painful, experiences from his 'No Reservations' travels.
In this DVD-style SPECIAL EDITION, host Anthony Bourdain and producer Chris Collins recount their tales of adventure in Iceland. Watch the episode with Bourdain and Collins as they provide scene-by-scene insight and commentary and describe what really happened when the cameras weren't rolling.
As Anthony Bourdain heads off to another Season 3 location, he takes some time to reminisce about his experiences during Season 2, namely those 'golden moments' that viewers don't always get to see.Tony has rules for his producers to follow - no silly hats, dancing, and NO karaoke. However, those rules aren't always followed. In Korea Tony was caught belting-out some tunes, in India he danced with a eunuch in the desert, and in Sweden he modeled the latest headwear courtesy of two professional stunt skiers. So much for rules! But Tony got his revenge on Exec Producer Chris, by attempting to wipe him out in the Swedish tundra; when that didn't succeed, Tony settled for old-fashioned embarrassment when Chris donned a makeshift diaper under a Japanese waterfall.Tony had many other gripes throughout the season, like traveling to frozen climates in the dead of winter (think Sweden and Quebec), eating 'risky' meals (like bacterial street food in India and raw seal in Inukjuak), and those 'If only we had been here yesterday." scenes (like the blackout in Puerto Rico or the cockfight that wasn't, in India). And among all those risks, slip-ups, and health hazards, injuries were bound to happen. And they did. Among the trips, slips, spills, and bumps, there were episodes of bacterial infections, nasty carnivorous bug bites, and even a nacho-related head injury.Yet among all of the embarrassing, painful, and freezing cold moments of Season 2, Tony admits he really does relish his job. Who else gets to dine with an Indian Maharajah, witness the sacred Monkey Dance in Indonesia, and enjoy freshly caught and prepared sushi at a tiny authentic Japanese sushi bar? Tony does, and he loves every minute of it.
Anthony Bourdain always makes his way home for the holidays; this time, he's celebrating with his brother's family at their home in the Hudson River Valley, and he has agreed to prepare the Christmas meal.
